The influence accreditation has on the pharmacy’s process in a hospital.

11th June 2014, hict organised a luncheon meeting themed “The influence accreditation has on the pharmacy’s process in a hospital.”

The introduction was delivered by Pharmacist Thomas De Rijdt, deputy head of department of the hospital pharmacy of UZ Leuven. He brought up a number of cases as an impulse for the debate:

  • Specific attention for the quality aspect as a way of thinking and doing
  • The importance of the impact of the culture within each hospital
  • The stratification of risks as something to be dealt with in the preparation of the accreditation process.

An interesting discussion arose in the presence of 8 hospital pharmacists, a supplier, and an academic. The following topics were elaborately addressed:

  • The necessity of bedside scanning and the diversity of barcodes in this case.
  • The necessity and added value of unidoses.
  • The impact of accreditation on policy within the hospital, the tempo and the manpower needed to get this quality system implemented and the eventual advantages for the patient.
