Jan Yperman Hospital – Training policy plans

The Jan Yperman Hospital in Ieper is a merged hospital that groups since 1998 three general hospitals from the region – Kliniek Zwarte Zusters (Ieper), OLV Hospitaal (Ieper) and Mariaziekenhuis (Poperinge). Since 2007 all the activities are centralised at one campus, with still an outpatient's clinic in Poperinge.

hict was asked to give workshops on the translation of the strategy into concrete policy plans. Organisation chart, management culture and division of responsibilities form part of this. The nursing director of Jan Yperman hospital asked for a pragmatic and hands-on introduction, during four half day sessions, to the world of policy plans for the nursing's middle management.


  • intake of the management structure and culture of the hospital/care centre; 
  • session 1: objectives – context healthcare today – the pathway to excellence – governance models, testing of the EFQM-kwadrant model for the Jan Yperman organisation; 
  • session 2: discussions concerning the strategy of the organisation and impact on the workplace – location, function, process and elements of the policy plan; 
  • session 3: elaboration of the policy plan for the specific unit; 
  • session 4: fine-tuning of the policy plans across the entire organisation; 
  • successive recommendations for the next months for the management. 


The final result of the sessions was a first verison of policy plans which the people responsible could immediately use at the workplace.
